Axis: Humanitarian Action
Office: Panama
Panama is a key point on the migratory route for people on the move in Latin America; thousands of people cross the Darien jungle every day to reach the country. This makes humanitarian aid a clear necessity in the region. At CADENA Panama, we deployed a six-month intervention at the Temporary Migratory Reception Station (ETRM) in Los Planes de Gualaca, Chiriqui to assist people in mobility after their passage through the Darien.
From June to October 2023, CADENA volunteers and in collaboration with Start Network were able to help people in mobility situations passing through the ETRM. We delivered 7,000 shoes, 8,000 articles of clothing and 6,000 hygiene items to people who lost everything during their journey through the jungle. We also helped in the reconstruction of the kitchen: in the refurbishment of the structure, wall framing, flooring and lighting, and in the purchase of stoves, sinks and work tables. Finally, we installed a 5,000 liter rainwater collection system for the use of the station. During these months we were able to provide the population in mobility with a dignified space, as well as footwear, clothing and hygiene items.
