Axis: Prevention and Sustainable Development
Office: Colombia
From June 18 to 19, 2023, CADENA Colombia decided to support the Wayuu indigenous community in La Guajira. During these days we built a school in Ichichón and delivered bicycles to the children to facilitate their transportation. Before the construction of the school, we organized a 5K race to raise funds and received a donation from Decathlon to deliver the bicycles.
We chose this community because in the previous months we analyzed that it had high levels of malnutrition, so we wanted to provide them with integral support: access to water, transportation and an educational space. This is one of several visits we made to Ichichón. Before that, CADENA inaugurated a water well and we donated bicycles, which provided transportation for the children and youth. After this donation, the community was able to build houses, roads and mud structures. From this, we decided to build a school for early childhood, hand in hand with the community.
In total we benefited 450 people with the construction of the school and delivered 48 bicycles. At CADENA Colombia we recognize the historical responsibility we have with native populations in the country, recognizing their agency and providing support far from welfare lenses, working together to generate lasting changes.
