In November 2016, the category-3 Hurricane Otto reached Costa Rica. At least 10 people died, and 23 communities became completely isolated during this event. The CADENA International team moved to the disaster area to deliver aid to the most affected populations in Upala.

This case of humanitarian action was the beginning of our presence in Costa Rica. From there onward, we began to coordinate response operations in the area, and eventually, we established our offices.

Why are we located in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is located in an area prone to disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, atmospheric phenomena, and landslides. The likelihood of being at risk of these disasters has increased substantially over the past three decades.

Similarly, the number of forced displacements has increased, which has contributed to the migration crisis in the region. The composition of the groups traveling through the country has changed: before they were mostly men, now women and children also migrate, which implies a challenge of assistance and protection.

This combination of factors means that our work has to take place on multiple fronts, from crisis and disaster management to prevention and resilience programs.
